The 60-Second Beginner Guide
Bridge is considered the most strategic card game ever invented! You play with a partner sitting across from you. The game starts with an "Auction", where you use coded bids to secretly tell your partner what kind of cards you have, and you try to agree on a target number of rounds to win. The craziest part? Once the playing starts, one player's cards are put completely face-up on the table for everyone to see! Their partner gets to control those cards. Your team's goal is to work together to win the exact number of rounds you promised during the auction.
1. Setup
- 1Bridge is strictly played with 4 players, divided into two teams of partnerships sitting across from each other (North/South vs East/West).
- 2All 52 cards are dealt out so each player has 13 cards.
2. How to Play
The Auction: Before playing, teams "bid" in a complex auction to declare how many tricks they think they can win, and which suit they want to be the Trump suit (or "No Trump"). The highest bid wins the auction and becomes the "Contract".
The Play: The player who won the auction is the "Declarer". The person to their left leads the first card. Then, the Declarer's partner lays all 13 of their cards FACE-UP on the table! This is the "Dummy".
The Declarer now plays both their own hidden hand AND the face-up Dummy hand, deciding which cards to play for both.
Players must follow suit if possible. Highest card of the led suit or highest trump wins the trick.
Scoring
- •Scoring is incredibly complex. The Declarer's team gets points for fulfilling their Contract (winning the number of tricks they promised).
- •If they fail, the defending team gets penalty points instead.
- •There are huge bonuses for bidding and making a "Game" or a "Slam" (bidding to win 12 or all 13 tricks).
Winning Conditions
- ✓A team wins a "Game" by accumulating 100 contract points across multiple rounds.
- ✓The first team to win two Games wins the "Rubber" and gets a massive point bonus, ending the match.
