The 60-Second Beginner Guide
Rummy is all about organizing chaos! You are dealt 13 messy cards, and your job is to arrange them into neat little groups. You want to make "Runs" (like 8, 9, 10 of Diamonds) and "Sets" (like three Jacks of different colors). Every turn, you pick up a new card to see if it helps your groups, and then throw away a card you don't want. The most important rule to remember: You CANNOT win unless you have at least one "Pure Run" (a run that doesn't use any wild Joker cards). Once all 13 of your cards fit perfectly into valid groups, you declare victory!
1. Setup
- 1The game is usually played with 2 standard decks of cards, including 2 printed Jokers.
- 2Each player is dealt exactly 13 cards.
- 3The remaining deck is placed face-down in the center to form the "Stock Pile".
- 4The top card of the Stock Pile is flipped face-up and placed next to it to form the "Discard Pile".
- 5One random card is pulled from the Stock Pile and placed face-up under the deck. This card, and all cards of the same rank across all suits, instantly become "Wild Jokers" for this round!
2. How to Play
On your turn, you MUST start by drawing exactly one card. You can either take the unknown top card from the face-down Stock Pile, OR take the face-up top card from the Discard Pile.
After you draw, you must look at your 14 cards and try to organize them into valid "Melds" (Sequences or Sets).
To end your turn, you MUST discard one card from your hand face-up onto the Discard Pile, bringing your hand back down to 13 cards.
Scoring
- •To win, you must arrange all 13 of your cards into valid Melds and make a valid "Declaration".
- •A "Sequence" (or Run) is 3 or more consecutive cards of the EXACT SAME suit (e.g., 4-5-6 of Hearts).
- •A "Set" is 3 or 4 cards of the SAME RANK but DIFFERENT suits (e.g., 7 of Hearts, 7 of Clubs, 7 of Spades).
- •CRITICAL RULE: To make a valid declaration, you MUST have at least two Sequences, and at least one of them MUST be a "Pure Sequence" (a sequence made entirely of natural cards without using any Jokers).
Winning Conditions
- ✓You win the round immediately if you can form all 13 of your cards into valid Sets and Sequences (including the mandatory Pure Sequence) and discard your 14th card to declare.
- ✓When someone wins, everyone else receives penalty points based on the cards in their hand that are not part of a valid Meld. Face cards are -10, others are face value. The player with the lowest total penalty points across multiple rounds wins the entire game.
